Hi there. I’m Ian and I’m studying the BA (Hons) Degree in Songwriting at BIMM Institute Dublin.
Why did you choose to study Songwriting?
For a long while, I considered studying Music Journalism at one of the UK BIMM colleges. But, as I progressed more as a musician, I realised I loved doing nothing more than playing and creating music myself. It really is the biggest passion in my life, and the Songwriting course is the best possible extension of that passion.
What’s it been like studying in Dublin?
Studying in Dublin has been pretty weird with all of us being in lockdown, but I’ve really enjoyed my time studying here so far. Having had only a limited amount of classes in person (with most of it being online), it’s been quite a task to adapt to a new kind of learning environment. However, BIMM really gives you the tools and support if you need to figure out a way for you to make it all work.
“You get to work with so many amazingly talented musicians that each have their own perspectives on music.”
How has being at BIMM helped you develop as a musician?
Being at BIMM has helped me develop as a musician in multiple different ways. Studying here really forces you to be continuously productive with the time that you spend working on your music. Besides that, you get to work with so many amazingly talented musicians that each have their own perspectives on music. I have already learned so much in the short time that I have been here.
What piece of advice would you give to someone looking to study at BIMM Dublin?
If there’s one piece of advice that I would give to someone looking to study at BIMM, it’s to not get discouraged by where you are at right now musically. Everyone is going to be at different levels when you first get in. But, you have to remember that the course is four years and growth takes time – so don’t put too much pressure on yourself!
