Why Study Drums at BIMM Dublin?

Hi, I’m Sam and I’m currently in my first year of studying Drums at BIMM Institute Dublin.

Why did you choose to study Drums?

It’s what I love to do. Ever since I started playing four years ago, all I’ve wanted to do is be a musician. I started gigging and playing with bands very quickly.

Performing live as a touring drummer for a living is my ultimate goal. So, when it came time to choose a course that would aid my chosen career path, the Drums Commercial Modern Music stream was a no-brainer.

“Thinking long term, these are things that employers are looking for: versatility, creativity and control.”

How was BIMM helped you develop as a musician?

Studying at BIMM Institute has been an amazing experience so far. It has taught me about genres of music I love, and some I’ve never even heard of. My technical development and musical vocabulary have also improved dramatically since coming to BIMM.

Thinking long term, these are things that employers are looking for: versatility, creativity and control. I’ve noticed substantial changes in my playing and performing since coming to BIMM.

What has it been like studying Drums in Dublin?

Studying in Dublin has been great. I’m very lucky to be based in Dublin myself, so getting in and out of BIMM has been fine. Being that BIMM is based just off the city centre means there are forms of commuting to get there. Plus, it’s Dublin. The epicentre of music in Ireland. All the venues where aspiring musicians play their first gigs are here, such as Whelans, The Academy, The Grand Social, The Button Factory, etc. Having BIMM 10 or 15 minutes away from these venues is also a treat.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of studying in BIMM?

The best piece of advice I could offer someone thinking or coming to BIMM is not to sweat the audition. That tutor doesn’t expect you to play the most complex piece of music ever written; they just want to see who you are and where you are at as a musician. There’s nothing to be nervous about. You’re playing your instrument, and if you’re auditioning for BIMM, this is something you’re obviously passionate about: so just play. It’s nowhere near as daunting and intense as you may think it is. Just relax, breathe and have some fun with it!
