The recent VE Day 80th anniversary celebrations included a huge concert celebration at Horse Guards Parade in London, which was broadcast live on BBC One. The opening number featuring vocalist Fleur East featured a number of Performers College students, including Georgia Mallaburn, who we caught up with to find out more.
How did you audition to be in the VE Day 80 show?
The choreographer of the segment is Performers College alumnus, and approached Campus Dean Emma Rogers looking for dancers who performed in her City Rhythm piece at Move It 2025. The VE Day performance was going to have a similar feel to City Rhythm, and they were looking for dancers in that style. It was a huge honour to have been selected for this opportunity due to the scale of the production and also to know I would be representing my college in a professional environment, working with other dancers and creatives who have the careers I aspire to.
What happened on the day itself?
When we arrived on site we had time to take everything in and have lunch before beginning with hair and makeup, which was done for us by the fabulous team on-site. We then had time to rehearse on stage. We went through notes with our choreographer and assistant choreographer to ensure we were familiar with the tracking of the cameras and technical elements of the performance due to this performance being televised. We then had dinner before doing final checks and getting our in-ear monitors on, and had to ensure we were stage-ready before going live!
How did it feel to see yourself on TV afterwards?
After coming off stage I started getting messages through from friends and family back home of screenshots of me on TV and that was so surreal. It was nice to be able to go back and watch the performance again as the live performance goes so fast when you’re concentrating on your performance, but also trying to soak everything up so to experience it again on TV was amazing.
What did you learn from this contract?
This contract taught me that dreams really do come true and if you work hard enough, be a nice person, and go for things that sometimes might feel a bit scary and out of your comfort zone, you can achieve anything. I feel like my time at Performers College gave me every single tool I needed to feel well equipped for this contract and I was supported every single step of the way. Even though I’m now graduating, I know that support will continue.
What would your advice be to someone thinking of applying for Performers College?
My advice for someone thinking of applying for Performers College would be to just go for it! Throw yourself at all the opportunities that come your way, especially the ones that feel scary, and absorb everything you can from the lecturers and other students there. Approach the audition process as your truest self, showing your full personality because there is only one you and that is something that cannot be taught. The only opportunity you will regret is the ones you didn’t take!
What are you up to next?
Following on from graduation, I’ve signed with both a musical theatre agency and a commercial dance agency. I am continuing to audition and will soon be making the big move into London permanently! I will also be performing at Capital Radio’s Summer Time Ball at Wembley Stadium this summer, again another amazing opportunity from Performers College! I cannot wait to see what the future holds!
