Are you a musician, songwriter, producer (or all of the above) looking to build a successful, long-lasting career in the music industry? Well, our brand-new BA (Hons) Music could help you out there.

Designed in collaboration with our Industry Advisory Panel and over 230 industry experts, this course will give you the skills, knowledge, and professional experience you need to launch your career once you graduate – or even before!

Now, let’s explore BA (Hons) Music in more detail, including who it’s aimed at, what you’ll do in each year, and the careers you can go into afterwards.

Who is this course for?

BA (Hons) Music is for people who are passionate about music and ready to explore where their creativity could take them. Whether you already know your path or are still figuring it out, this course will help you shape your future in the industry.

Think about artists like Lady Gaga, RAYE, and Ed Sheeran – all at the very top of their game and climbing even higher. What do they have in common? They refuse to be boxed in. They’re involved in all stages of the music creation process: songwriting, production, and performance. Plus, they know how today’s industry works and how to thrive within it.

You don’t have to be skilled in every area – but having some experience in songwriting, performing and producing will give you a solid start. From there, this course will help you grow into a well-rounded, confident music professional, ready for whatever path you choose.

How is the course structured?

  1. In your first year, you’ll build a strong foundation through performance skills, songwriting techniques, audio capture, and content creation.
  2. Year two takes you deeper into your instrument. You’ll also learn about studio engineering and the commercial songwriting industry, with optional modules that allow you to follow your own interests.
  3. In your final year, you’ll refine your professional identity, respond to creative briefs, complete a portfolio, and take on a Final Project around something you’re passionate about.

What careers are available to me?

As an artist, you’ll be able to use all these skills throughout your career. And from your second year onwards, you can decide which area of music you think will help you get you where you want to go. Choose from these five pathways:

  • Performance – Join a band, or work as a live session musician or festival circuit musician.
  • Songwriting – Kick off your career as a singer-songwriter, ghost writer, or top-liner.
  • Production – Start your journey as a sound engineer, sound designer for video games, or studio owner.
  • Industry – Gain the insight and connections to carve your own path in A&R, artist management, or marketing.
  • Live – Work as a tour manager, stage technician, or event coordinator.

As you can see, BA (Hons) Music is an extremely versatile course that can take you just about anywhere. You’ll get a good grounding in all areas of the industry, and with our optional modules and Final Project, you’ll be able to steer the course in the direction you feel will be most helpful for your future.
