Who are you listening to at the moment?
Who I’m listening to; I’ve gotten waaaay into LCD Soundsystem these days. I’ve been on a singer-songwriter buzz for months, I knew every word of Villagers, Laura Marling & Lucy Rose’s songs. But lately, I started sticking a band together & suddenly anything about arrangement fascinates me. I’m loving LCD Soundsystem, Alt-J, The XX & Little Green Cars. All that good stuff.
What do you love about Dublin?
I love Dublin. It’s crazy moving here from the ends of the earth in Donegal to the busiest place in Ireland. I live & breath it. The whole place has a heartbeat. I live in Rathmines, & it really feels like home. I can walk in to any place & know I’ll adore the music. It’s such a tight community for music, I feel extremely welcome here.
Why Songwriting
Songwriting was a very sudden choice. I’d performed for years as part of a indie cover band. I wrote a few tunes, but I never did anything original with it. I played in Clubbeo in Donegal a few times, & I loved it. Songwriters were so surreal, but I felt inadequate beside them.
I was writing loads of poetry so lyrics were second nature to me, but adding it to my music just bewildered me. I took a difficult breakup with a songwriter, & suddenly my songs were just there.
I did the audition, did awfully & was shocked that I got in. Now I live & breath songwriting, I just don’t know how I ever thought I could do anything else.
