10th January 2024

The new year is well and truly here, and with it comes a whole new 12 months of storytelling and innovation. This year is a treasure trove for film enthusiasts, TV series binge-watchers, and gamers seeking immersive experiences.

We’ve pulled together this list of highly anticipated film and TV titles set to inspire the next generation of creative minds and keep us glued to our screens over the coming months.

TV and Film releases in 2024

Poor Things

Yorgos Lanthimos, the mastermind behind award-winning films such as The Lobster, The Favourite and The Killing of a Sacred Deer, teams up with power-house actors Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe and Mark Ruffalo to bring Alasdair Gray’s novel Poor Things to life.

Kicking off award season in style, Poor Things took home the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy, as well as seeing Emma Stone win the award for Female Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for her role as Bella.

Set for January release, this film promises a surreal rollercoaster through a world rife with absurdity and social commentary. Following the story of Stone’s Bella, a young woman brought back to life by an unorthodox scientist, the film spins a whirlwind tale of identity, love, and societal norms, delivering an unforgettable cinematic experience. We can’t wait to see it!

House of the Dragon: Season 2

The return of House of the Dragon is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated TV events of 2024. With its Season 1 pilot achieving the highest viewing figures of any new original series in the history of HBO, its second season will be looking to continue the success as it drops fans directly back into the Targaryen civil war known as the ‘Dance of the Dragons’.

A summer release is on the horizon, ensuring a gripping continuation of captivating drama, political intrigue and, of course, dragons! The series, set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, promises to dive deeper into the family’s history, as power struggles unfold, and destinies collide.

We’ve previously had the privilege of welcoming Fabian Wagner, the cinematographer for House of the Dragon and our esteemed patron at the Manchester college, for remarkable in-person workshops. During these sessions, our students had the unique opportunity to delve into recreating scenes from Season 1 using the same techniques employed in shooting his episodes. [Read more]

Bob Marley: One Love

If there’s one thing we love at BIMM University, it’s seeing different forms of creative disciplines working in tandem, and we can think of no better example than the upcoming biographical musical homage to one of the world’s most iconic musicians, Bob Marley: One Love.

With the incredible Kingsley Ben-Adir taking on the role of a lifetime, the film follows Marley’s rise to fame up until his death in the early 1980s, and is a celebration of his life, music, and enduring impact on culture worldwide. This cinematic tribute promises to honour Marley’s legacy, illuminating his artistry and messages that continue to inspire millions globally.

Doctor Who: Season 1

Whovians, rejoice! The TARDIS is set to materialise once again in the very safe hands of Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor. Fresh from the 60th anniversary specials that saw the return of both David Tennant and Catherine Tate, and a Christmas special heralding a new era of the Whoniverse, fans are eagerly anticipating a whole new season of adventures through time and space.

With previous masterclass guest Russell T. Davies [link to masterclass clip] back in the driving seat as showrunner, and the acquisition of Doctor Who’s international broadcasting rights by Disney+, we couldn’t be more excited to experience this new exhilarating ride through the wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey world of the Doctor as the stage is reset with Season 1 of a new era.

Scheduled for a May release, each episode of the season will also be accompanied by a behind-the-scenes, 30-minute companion show on BBC Three, Doctor Who: Unleashed.
