Welcome to Essex – a treasure trove of artistic inspiration. This area (and neighbouring London) is home to some of the UK’s finest theatres and live performance venues, hosting key events throughout the year that draw international talent from across the performing arts spectrum. Whether you’re into music, dance, or theatre, there’s something here to ignite everyone’s cultural passions.
Days Out
Imagine being able to soak in world-class entertainment while also having the beach a mere 20 minutes from your doorstep! For those seeking adventure, you’re in luck. Attractions like Adventure Island near Southend Pier, the Southend Museum and Planetarium for astronomy enthusiasts, and Hollywood Bowl in Basildon are all within easy reach. And with train stations in both Basildon and Rayleigh offering direct links to London, bigger excursions are always on the cards.
Live Entertainment
Theatre lovers will be spoilt for choice. Right in Basildon, the Towngate Theatre offers a diverse programme of drama, musicals, comedy, and more, culminating in a spectacular pantomime season each Christmas. In Southend, the Cliffs Pavilion has been hosting a wide array of performances since 1964, including shows by music legends like Paul McCartney, Oasis, and Blur. Its sister venue, the charming Edwardian-era Palace Theatre, provides a more intimate setting for touring shows and local productions.
Of course, we can’t ignore our neighbour, London. The West End, with its legendary venues like The Lyric and The Dominion, and theatre-lined streets like Shaftsbury Avenue, stands as the world’s premier musical theatre destination, rivalled only by New York’s Broadway.
Nights out
For those who love to party, options abound. You’ll love the vibrant local nightlife in Basildon, Southend, and Rayleigh, with popular venues like Unit 7 and The Loft. If you want to go further afield, head to London to experience the electric atmosphere of Shoreditch, Camden, and the West End, home to the UK’s most prestigious bars and clubs.
Film buffs can catch the latest releases at Curzon Colchester, Cineworld Basildon, or Odeon Southend. The area also boasts a thriving LGBTQ+ scene, known for its welcoming atmosphere, with London’s annual Pride celebrations showcasing the heart of this vibrant culture.
Retail Therapy
Shopping enthusiasts will find themselves in retail heaven. Besides the bustling high streets of Basildon, Southend, and Colchester, you’ll have easy access to two of the UK’s largest shopping centres. Lakeside Shopping Centre boasts over 240 shops, restaurants, and leisure attractions, while Bluewater Shopping Centre, just a short trip across the Thames, offers 330 shops and eateries across its vast 154,000 square metre space.
Basic Needs
For day-to-day needs, Corringham town centre, within walking distance of the Performers location, offers Morrisons and Co-Op supermarkets along with independent shops and cafés. Those near the Rayleigh location will find ASDA, Sainsburys, and Tesco Local nearby, along with popular high street shops.
Eating Out
Foodies will delight in the diverse restaurant scene across London and Essex, catering to all tastes and budgets. Lakeside shopping centre and the seaside towns of Leigh on Sea and Southend offer particularly delightful dining options.
It’s easy being green
Nature lovers haven’t been forgotten either. Essex boasts plenty of green spaces, with popular spots including One Tree Hill in Langdon Hills Country Park and the picturesque village of East Tilbury. For more adventurous outings, consider visiting Colchester Zoo, exploring Hadleigh Castle, or getting your adrenaline pumping at Lee Valley White Water Centre.
