Hey, I’m Jonathan, and I’m a bass player studying Commercial Modern Music at BIMM Institute Dublin.
Why did you choose to study Bass?
When I finished school, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do. I’ve always loved music, and I’ve always been passionate about learning about music. So, I thought: “why not study it since it’s something I’m interested in?” I found out about BIMM Institute and I looked into the course, and it just looked perfect. I knew I wanted to do it straight away.
What’s it been like studying in Dublin?
Despite Dublin being quite a small city, there’s a really vibrant music scene, and that’s across all genres. I mean, no matter what you want to play – if it’s rock, if it’s funk – there’s a place for you and your music, and it’s really, really easy to get involved and jump into the music scene.
How has being at BIMM helped you to develop as a musician?
“By the time I got to second year, I was in an original band and I was also working with a function band taking paid gigs as well.”
So, going into first year, you could say I was a very inexperienced musician. I’d never played a gig, I didn’t know many musicians, my technique wasn’t really great. But, in first year, I went to my classes, and I practised as much as I could. By the time I got to second year, I was in an original band and I was also working with a function band taking paid gigs as well.
What piece of advice would you give to someone looking to study at BIMM?
