On Friday, BIMM Berlin’s Sector 5 released their latest single ‘Black Shark Casino’.
Their sound is a blend of their previous musical directions – from hard rock to melancholic pop and even a dash of hip-hop. We’re loving this latest release and can’t wait to hear their new Shine EP, which they’re releasing soon. We caught up with Sector 5 to find out about the latest track.
What was your inspiration when you began writing the track?
Interestingly enough, the inspiration was a dream that I (Mika, lead vocals) once had. I never forgot the dream because it was so vivid and the more I thought about it, the more sense it made, so I figured I‘d use it for my music.
Are there any artists that inspire you when writing?
Basically, all the artists I listen to do. Although, my biggest inspiration over the last few years has been Outkast.
What is key to your sound and how do you make your music stand out?
I don‘t think I can really narrow that down. I always try to have at least one element of a song sound unique, but I never do that consciously. When I write, I keep in mind what songs we already have and aim to create something that doesn‘t deviate too much whilst not rehashing existing stuff.
How does your songwriting process work?
One of us usually writes a song or a song sketch and works on it until it is presentable. Then we get together and work out the little things in the song i.e., flaws or improvements. A lot of the time, we experiment with the instrumentation and have different versions of the song until it works.

How has studying at BIMM helped you develop as an artist?
It has helped a lot. BIMM has introduced us to co-writing sessions and other musicians and producers, which mixed up our sound immensely. It’s also introduced us to the business side of the industry. It has made us pay more attention to things we probably wouldn’t have such as music blogs, our image, or just the overall professional appearance. We are surrounded by other creatives, which gives us an additional drive to make music ourselves.
What’s next for you?
‘Black Shark Casino’ is the last song from our upcoming Shine EP and we will release another music video. After that, we will continue releasing singles until we get to our debut album (which we will start recording shortly).
