In this spring series, Meet the Industry Partners, we have now heard from all three of our schools, from Brighton in the south to Manchester in the north, via Brimingham. It has served as the perfect excuse to shine a spotlight on some of our industry associations across Screen and Film School, from the vast number of active relationships of this nature that we have. We’re now heading back down to the south coast and to Screen and Film School Brighton for their second nominated industry partner: Jump Start Productions.
Jump Start Productions is a Brighton-based film company that was formed in 2006 by Screen and Film School Brighton graduate Jamie Patterson and the multi-talented filmmaker Nathalie Grace. They strive to promote home-grown talent and try to stay true to their roots in the city. To date they have made fourteen feature films including Tucked starring Derren Nesbitt and Jordan Stephens, as well as the 2021 horror film The Kindred.
Screen and Film School Brighton collaborates with Jump Start through entry level jobs, industry placements, industry tutors, masterclasses, film screenings and summer feature film production recruitment. This summer alone, over 30 of our graduates have applied to work on Jump Start’s latest feature film – this includes senior technical and production roles, as well as some supporting entry level positions. This close working partnership allows graduates to land their first feature film credit, fresh out of the Film School.
Jamie Patterson himself, a graduate of Screen and Film School Brighton, directed his first feature film at the age of 21, and has gone on to become a prolific, award-winning British filmmaker. As well as writing and directing Tucked, a British drama that is set in the world of drag queens and won several awards, his subsequent feature film Tracks had its world premiere to a sold-out crowd at London’s Raindance Film Festival in 2018. Also written and directed by Patterson, this ‘interrailing comedy’ about a couple who take a trip by rail around Europe, was shot in some of the biggest tourist destinations on the continent, including London, Paris, Nice, Rome and Venice.
As well as Jamie and Nathalie, Jump Start have assembled a talented team which includes editor David Fricker and April Pearson, formerly a star of Skins. April works as an actor, producer and writer with Jump Start.
Our Industry Engagement team at Screen and Film School Brighton had this to say about Jump Start:
“We are incredibly excited to continue developing our relationship with Jamie Patterson and his indie feature production company, Jump Start. As well as hosting masterclasses and workshops with the Brighton-based company, we are thrilled to be supporting the team with recruitment for their next feature film, shooting this summer. Our graduates will have the chance to crew up the production, across both senior and entry level roles.”
Our aim is to put our students in the same room as talented, experienced industry experts, such as the team members that make up Jump Start Productions. We would like to thank them for their on-going support of the Film School. Keep an eye out for everything that Jump Start release in the future; their latest production, God’s Petting You, was released last year.
We’ll be heading back to Screen and Film Manchester next week to hear about a second chosen industry partner from the team in Spinningfields.
