This week’s Track of the Week comes from BIMM Institute Berlin student Joshua Smith.

Check out his latest track, ‘Blame’ below!

Describe your new track in three words…

Emotional, powerful, therapeutic

What inspired you when writing this track?

I had a crush on my best friend for seven years. After she got together with someone else, I was in a horrible headspace, blaming them for ‘ruining’ my life. This song was inspired by the sudden realisation that they had nothing to do with it and I was making myself feel that way.

Are there any artists that inspire you when writing?

If I received a euro for every time someone compares me to Ed Sheeran, I would not have to succeed in my career to live a decent life.

What would you say makes your music unique?

My music is unique because my songs are written about my life. Although I write my songs in order to make others feel less alone, the stories themselves are unique to me.

Do you have a process you follow when writing a song?

I only ever write songs about real things that have happened to me. I tend to write them just after they happened whilst I’m still feeling all the emotions. As for having an actual process of writing the songs, I tend to just play the guitar until I find something suitable and then freestyle until I find a way to tell the story.

How has studying at BIMM helped you develop as an artist?

BIMM Institute has always been about making connections. Although the classes have been very insightful and helped me understand the more difficult sides of the industry the most useful thing I have received from BIMM Institute Berlin is the friendships and connections that I have made throughout the last three years.

What’s next for you?

Like a lot of other third-year students, I am not entirely sure of what’s next. I’m hoping to stay in Berlin so I can carry on working on my career as an artist. Ideally, I would like to get a job in the music industry so I can stay close to my passion.
