The Film School guide to Freshers

21st September 2020

The new term has arrived and so have our 2020 students… Welcome to Film School!

It’s been a strange year but September has finally arrived and we can’t wait to see you all get stuck in to your courses. But first comes Freshers’ Week! It’ll be playing out a little differently to previous years, but don’t worry- there’s still plenty to get involved in. Whether you’re excited, or nervous, or a bit of both, Screen and Film School Brighton have your back with our 2020 Guide to Freshers. Check out our top tips for making your first week with us a success!

Explore Brighton (and Hove!)

There’s truly no better way of exploring the nooks and crannies of this incredible city than by foot- so grab your smartphone and pull on your comfiest shoes for our Freshers Reccy on Tuesday 22nd September. This activity will see you discovering some of Brighton and Hove’s most interesting locations- perfect for making notes on where you might want to film one of your projects in the upcoming months! Make sure to tag us in your Instagram stories at every location (@screenfilmschool) and use the hashtag #FreshersReccy2020 to win free cinema tickets.

Don’t forget to get acquainted with our three Brighton sites by watching our video walkthroughs, or if you have any questions you need answering take advantage of our New Student Drop-Ins, running from 10 am to 4 pm every day this week at our Central Site with our Admissions Advisors.

Lights, Camera, Action!

Freshers is a great time to start working through your list of must-see films with like-minded students. While you’re settling into your new homes, what better way to get to know each other than with some good old fashioned movie nights?! Stock up on popcorn and have one if you choose a film each evening; you might just discover your new favourite.

If you’re looking for somewhere more iconic to catch a showing, you can’t get better than the longest-running cinema in the UK (and hosts of your Induction Event) The Duke of York’s Picturehouse. Programming an eclectic range of releases, from cult classics, to silent films with live scores, foreign language cinema, and the latest award-winning pictures, there’s something for everybody. They even have a second location at Komedia- see if you can spot their signature can-can legs as you’re exploring the North Laine.

If you fancy getting creative, now’s the perfect time! Take your smartphone out and about and capture some footage to edit together. See what you can create in the timeframe of one week- whether it’s the next micro-short sensation, or simply just a beautiful memento of the beginning of your Film School Journey to look back on in years to come.

Just can’t wait to get started? We’ve got some exclusive Freshers Masterclasses lined up for you! Wednesday 23rd September sees Cinematographer Stuart Bentley sharing and discussing his ‘Cinematography Breakdown’ and Thursday 24th September welcomes Director, Writer & Producer Jamie Patterson to screen and discuss his film Tracks (2020). Check your emails for the Zoom links that were sent out with your freshers schedule!
