Who are you listening to at the moment?
My Spotify playlist is pretty crowded with music from every genre imaginable but some of my favorites at the moment are FKA Twigs, Bjork, Wolf Alice, LCD Sound System, Everything Everything, Bear Hands, Massive Attack, The Vaccines, Battles, Run The Jewels, Vampire Weekend, Death Grips (in small, safe doses), St. Vincent, Young Fathers as well as some homegrown heroes like Otherkin, Overhead, The Albatross, Thumper, Bitch Falcon, and Girl Band. The Irish Rock scene is inspiring me to no end!
I’ve been writing music since I was 13, but I’ve only truly started to refine sound in the last 2-3 years. Every gig I attend gives me fresh ideas about what’s sonically possible.
What do you love about Dublin?
The last 4 years I’ve spent in Dublin have been amazing. I’m originally from Cork but I was drawn to Dublin because of the dense, diverse music scene that exists here. I think moving away from home can be tough but it’s a huge learning experience; it forces you to become independent and learn how to juggle work, college and your social life which is very rewarding.
Apart from that, I’ve met so many amazing musicians through BIMM, some of whom have helped me to release my own music for the first time last year and will be helping me again this year, which is very exciting! Also, Dublin is small, and it’s easy to make valuable connections here if you’re in the right place at the right time.
Why Vocals?
When I first heard about BIMM from a friend, it seemed like a no-brainer. Now, in my final year of the BA in Commercial Modern Music, I can’t equate the experience I’ve had to anything else. Being surrounded by such talented and diverse musicians and tutors is inspiring, but it also pushes you to work hard to impress your peers and build on whatever experience you have going in.BIMM has prepared me for the real world and apart from 4 years of vocal training I’ve had the opportunity to study the business industry in detail with very respectable people teaching those modules, which I think is vital information for anyone serious about music and is something I wouldn’t have been able to do anywhere else.
The tutorial system means that even though I am in the Vocals course, I can get guitar or songwriting lessons every week with tutors to develop that part of my craft. Through the End of Term gigs, I’ve had the opportunity to play in loads of really cool venues including Whelans,The Button Factory and Opium Rooms, as well as many other gigs that have happened as a result of the connections I’ve made with my peers over the years studying here.
BIMM gave me the kick I needed to get serious about my music and the tools to turn it from a hobby into a career and I’m intrigued to see where the experience will take me next.
