Screen and Film School Brighton recently unveiled a specially commissioned piece of themed artwork for their flagship building near Brighton beach.
The bespoke art piece, which was created by Brighton-based artist Manic Minotaur (aka Scott Nellis), takes the form of a painted surfboard – an object which symbolises the Film School’s unique seaside location.
The psychedelic design features iconic imagery of sunny Brighton including the West Pier, The Royal Pavilion building and its exotic gardens, the British Airways i360, and of course, seagulls!
Screen and Film School worked closely with Nellis to ensure the design also featured references to the film industry including director’s chairs, a cinematic camera centrepiece and two strong female characters with celluloid film for hair.

Nellis summarised what the process of creating the stunning art piece was like:
“When Screen and Film School Brighton got in touch with me about painting a surfboard, it was a very exciting moment for me as I’d not painted anything like it before. I love opportunities that provide me with a new experience and bring something out of the ordinary to my portfolio.
When I received the unpainted surfboard, I couldn’t wait to inject colourful life into it and have to say I am extremely happy with the outcome. It really has been a lovely project to be involved in and a pleasure to be able to work with such a great creative institution.”
College Principal Itziar Leighton was incredibly pleased with the finished piece, saying:
“We realise how lucky we are to be based in such a creative, diverse and vibrant city, and as such we wanted some art which reflected our long-standing connection to the city and that celebrated Brighton in all its colour and glory.
We are so pleased with the outcome, and feel it represents Brighton and its beach life perfectly.
Our students come from all parts of the UK and Europe, seeking the opportunity to develop their creative filmmaking skills. They all have one thing in common in that they love living in Brighton, and find inspiration in being close to the sea, stunning countryside and surrounded by creative, open and welcoming people, which is no surprise to us!”
The surfboard has been given pride of place in the reception area of Screen and Film School Central, where is has been warmly received by staff and students alike.
