As part of our Music Made Us campaign, BIMM student Lani Stephens tells us what inspired her route into music, why she chose to study Songwriting, and what drew her to Birmingham.

Who inspired your route into music?

The person that inspired my route into music was Pink. I remember being really little and loving songs like “So What” and “Who Knew”. I just thought she was so cool and watching her perform was what made me want to write my own songs and sing like her.

What made you choose to study Songwriting?

I’ve always felt that Songwriting was the purest form of music-making. There’s something about being able to turn a feeling or idea into something tangible like a song.

Why is Birmingham right for you?

Birmingham is right for me because no other city in the country has that raw homegrown sound like the Brummies. It has a music scene where you can watch a jazz band and a metal band in one night and have the best time. Plus, it’s where my family’s from so I’ve always felt at home in Brum.
