Making a name for themselves in the Birmingham Music Scene, Springs bring their unique sound of indie, rock metal, electronica and even a bit of jazz to their debut EP.

What was your inspiration when you began writing the EP?

Writing the EP happened over a two-year process. There were a lot of songs that could’ve been on there that didn’t make it but we are so pleased with all the songs. They’ve all had so many different versions that we are sure we’ve released the best!

Are there any artists that inspire you when writing?

I think there were a lot of artists that we take influence from as our sound is so experimental. Jeff Buckley plays a part for sure, along with The 1975, Viola Beach and Wallows. We try to make that drowning sensation to a major key in our music, which is My Bloody Valentine all over.

What is key to your sound and how do you make your music stand out?

Just staying as far away from genres as possible. Utilising many different genres in our instruments such as indie, emo, rock, jazz, metal, electronica but also not being the same generic band.

How does your songwriting process work?

So we start with our lead singer Didds writing the lyrics and a demo, then it gets shared around to the band for critiques and changes until we’ve changed it so much that we love it.

Some songs like ‘Desire’ have stayed exactly the same and didn’t need many adjustments from the demo, but some songs like ‘Free After Party’ have had so many different versions that we can’t keep up.

Describe your sound in 3 words…

Transcendent, romantic, emo

How has studying at BIMM Institute helped you develop as an artist?

BIMM has helped us a lot with our band as we all met at BIMM and using the facilities and the continuous support from students and teachers really drives us to a place I don’t think we could’ve reached without attending. This is especially true in Birmingham as the BIMM Birmingham music scene is so inclusive and supportive.

What’s next for you?

We are finally able to gig again with our first gig back from lockdown on November 14th at Deadwax, Digbeth. We’ve also just received a year-long program with MAS Records so we have a lot to look forward with those guys. And we have new music on the way very soon, which we couldn’t be more excited about!
