Okay, July is here and we’re really kickstarting your Monday morning with our Track of the Week from BIMM Brighton’s PoliteBuro.
Pulling influences from electronic and post-punk, their debut single ‘MiddleChild’ will wake you up, and get you ready for the new week.
Listen now and find out a bit more about the track below.
What was your inspiration when you began writing the track?
The song is about transition and moving to a different place (North to South) and having to adapt to a new environment. When Joe brought the song to Jas, the dynamics of the song changed due to our teamwork being really good. It is also about mental health and silent emotions.
Are there any artists that inspire you when writing?
LCD Soundsystem, Kraftwerk, Joy Division, Siouxsie and the Banshees.
What is key to your sound and how do you make your music stand out?
The key to our sound is the relationship between Joe and Jas and how we work together. It comes together extremely quickly. We blend our skill sets together before bringing it to the others.
How does your songwriting process work?
Joe has a lot of lyrics in books and saved into his phone. He then sees what fits certain bass lines the best with the emotion and what’s going on around him at the time. He always aims to make sounds stand out to emphasise certain parts. He does this by using simplicity and building layers with sounds.
Describe your sound in 3 words…
Industrial, Simple, Melodic.
How has studying at BIMM helped you develop as an artist?
BIMM has helped us to meet the musicians in the band. It also helped us to meet lecturers such as Nick Evans and Kieron Pepper, who have inspired us and contributed towards the band.
What’s next for you?
Our next single ‘Talk’ will be released this coming August and we hope to experiment more with the electronic dance side of things.
