On October 14th and 15th, Performers College students, staff, and graduates took part in Can You Dance? UK’s annual super convention, held at Liverpool’s ECL and ACC.

Created to provide a platform to inspire and educate dancers in a supportive environment, Can You Dance? is at the forefront of the UK dance scene. The super convention is the UK’s biggest dance expo, featuring over two hundred masterclasses, one hundred exhibitors, and a schedule of elaborate performances from dance schools and organisations from across the country.

Over 80 current students from our Essex and Birmingham campuses came together to take part, performing on the Main Stage and Centre Stage over the weekend in a pre-show performance, two contrasting main stage pieces in the college showcase, two musical theatre production pieces with live vocals and dance, and the Performers College showcase. The showcase was a forty-five-minute diverse performance of musical theatre, commercial, lyrical, contemporary, and vocal performances choreographed and staged by some of the incredible tutors from both Performers College campuses.

BA (Hons) Musical Theatre & Dance student Tate Harrison said of the event:

“Performing at the CYD Super convention in Liverpool was such a fun experience. Being able to perform a variety of styles is so useful and rewarding whilst training, and I will always be grateful for opportunities like this. One of the best parts of the weekend was being able to collaborate with the Birmingham campus, getting to see the diverse work from both campuses and support one another was really special. Performance opportunities like this are something I will always remember!”

While our talented students wowed the crowds on stage, Performers College BA Musical Theatre and Dance deputy course leader, Kieran Jae, held a sold-out musical theatre masterclass, and Essex campus dean, Emma Rogers, was a judge on the final competition. Emma had this to say about the event:

“It has been a great privilege for Performers College to be headline sponsors for the Can You Dance? 2023 season. There is such incredible talent emerging and established across the UK and Ireland and we have been so pleased to be able to connect and introduce Performers College to the younger generation of dance and musical theatre stars of the future.

“The Super Convention was an incredible event that allowed collaboration between our Birmingham and Essex students in a performance environment showcasing and highlighting the diverse training available at our campuses. To be a part of this event and allow professional performance opportunities for our students is key to allowing them develop and build confidence whilst training.”
