This week’s Track of the Week comes from BIMM Institute graduate, Kymara.

Check out her latest track, ‘Trippin’’ below!

Describe your new track in three words…

Fun, silly and free

What inspired you when writing this track?

The lyrics in ‘Trippin’’ were inspired by late nights spent with friends and the journey through different states as these nights turn to morning.

Are there any artists that inspire you when writing?

Many many artists inspire me. Recently I’ve been listening to a lot to Brittany Howard; I love the honesty and pureness in her lyrics and melodies.

What would you say makes your music unique?

My storytelling makes my music unique, from a young age, I learned to be open about my emotions, feelings and thoughts. You can hear that in my songwriting.

Do you have a process you follow when writing a song?

Not really. Three years ago I wrote my first ever track behind the piano by myself. I still do that sometimes! Now that I have a band, I like them to get involved in this process. Every person in my band is so talented and unique, so I want them to be part of the writing process.

When we jam, all of the ideas I get I written down and at home – in my little bubble – I can finish the lyrics and melodies. Like many other writers, I also have a lot of notes and voice memos on my phone that I share with my band to create songs.

How has studying at BIMM helped you develop as an artist?

Before I studied at BIMM, I didn’t have any idea about what I wanted to do. I just knew that I liked singing. I studied vocals, and in my second year, I decided to learn more about songwriting, so I booked lots of 1:1 sessions with different tutors. These were helpful and taught me so so much. I always felt really supported by the tutors at BIMM, and I think as a starting songwriter, that’s very important.

What’s next?

We’re playing The Great Escape on 14 May at Jubilee Square. We’ve got our first headline show in The Netherlands (where I’m from) on 5 June at Tivoli in Utrecht to celebrate the release of our debut EP New Road (which will be out on the 3 June). On the 11 June, we are playing MOVES festival at the Old Market in Brighton. We’re supporting Bare Jams on their tour in The Netherlands in September. Many more gigs during the summer around the UK and working on new music, of course.
