Lois’ journey at our Manchester campus has been a transformative exploration of her passion for performance, marked by pivotal moments of self-discovery and growth.
Discovering My Passion
Growing up, I always had a love for the arts, but it was more of a side hobby than a potential career path. With an academic background, I initially focused on more traditional subjects. However, as I approached the end of my time in college, I realised that my true passion lay in impacting people on a personal level through performance. The idea of pursuing the arts was both exhilarating and daunting, but I knew it was the right path for me.
Choosing ICTheatre
When I attended a career fair and met the friendly representatives, I was immediately drawn to their energy and enthusiasm. Their description of the school ignited a fire within me, and I knew I had to explore this opportunity further. I attended an audition day at the Manchester campus and a workshop day at the Brighton campus, both of which gave me a realistic glimpse into the course and solidified my decision to apply.
The Audition Experience
The audition process was a nerve-wracking yet exciting experience. After initially receiving rejections from my other choices, I applied through UCAS Extra when I received an offer. The audition day itself was a whirlwind of body and voice workshops, improvisation exercises, and a monologue audition. Despite my initial nerves, I quickly felt at ease in the supportive environment and even made friends with fellow applicants, some of whom I still chat with today.
Finding a Home in Manchester
When I was offered a place at both the Manchester and Brighton campuses, I was overjoyed and proud of my accomplishment. After careful consideration, I chose to accept the offer at Manchester, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision. I moved into a shared flat, surrounded by fellow students, and immediately felt at home. The staff’s support and the abundance of social spaces and study areas have made my transition seamless.
Facilities That Inspire
One of the highlights of studying in Manchester has been the exceptional facilities, particularly the theatre in the Dancehouse. Performing my second-year projects on that stage made everything feel truly real and solidified my passion for the craft. The campus’ central location in the heart of Manchester adds an extra layer of excitement, immersing me in the city’s vibrant atmosphere.
Embracing Growth and Support
My time here has been an incredible journey of self-discovery and growth. Modules like the comedy semester challenged me to step out of my comfort zone and embrace vulnerability in a way I never had before. The support and guidance of my tutors, such as Bill Hopkinson and Mark Winstanley, have been invaluable in helping me realise my true potential and overcome self-doubt. Receiving the Head of School Award at the end of the year was a testament to the hard work and dedication I’ve put into my studies.
The Skills Acquired
The skills I’ve acquired during my time here have been invaluable, ranging from stage combat and mime to acrobatics, voice work and Shakespeare. Even in my most challenging moments, such as tension release with Laura Carroll or acrobatics with Callum Arnott, the supportive environment empowered me to push through my fears and grow as a performer.
Looking Towards the Future
As I approach my final year, I’m filled with excitement for what the future holds. My dream is to secure an agent and dive headfirst into the world of performance, with a particular love for the work of the National Theatre and the RSC, especially in physical theatre. However, I remain open to any opportunity that allows me to pursue my passion for acting.
Joining Performers College
To anyone considering applying for BA Performing Arts, my advice is simple: be yourself, embrace vulnerability, and leave your comfort zone. The audition process isn’t about perfection; it’s about showcasing your willingness to explore and play. If I had put less pressure on myself to be ‘good’ from the start, I would have progressed even faster. The open days truly capture the essence of what it means to be a student here – an environment that encourages you to embrace your authentic self and follow your passion.”
As Lois approaches her final year, she eagerly anticipates embracing new opportunities in the world of performance, fuelled by her enriching experiences and unwavering passion.
