Students collaborate with Anattic for short film

17th July 2024

Earlier in the year, a number of our Manchester Filmmaking students had the amazing opportunity to collaborate on a short film with our industry partner Anattic.

We recently caught up with James Copson, the founder of Anattic, and Manchester BA (Hons) Filmmaking student Daniel Mahoney, about their experiences working together on ‘The Liver,’ a Gothic fairy-tale set in a contemporary folk-world of collapsing social care system. This project has not only highlighted our students’ potential but has also seen the finished film earn widespread recognition across several prestigious film festivals, including the Manchester Film Festival, Northampton Film Festival, Winchester Film Festival, and Bolton Film Festival.

Join us as we discuss their creative journeys, the making of The Liver, and the dynamic partnership between an established industry leader and a promising new talent.

Can you tell us a little more about Anattic and how it began?

James: I set up the company in 2015 to create brand documentary and commercials. Anattic is a commercial production house founded and headquartered in Manchester. I am passionate about Manchester as a creative city and want to promote creativity and talent in the North West, globally.

How did working together come about?

James: We have always wanted to support future talent with opportunities in the industry and on set experience. After speaking with the staff at Screen and Film school it seemed like a great fit and that there would be plenty of students who would do a great job. The students were super helpful and keen. They showed great initiative and willingness to learn and become part of the team.

Daniel: I was able to secure a role as a runner through Screen and Film School during my first year of study. I must admit that walking on set was nerve-wracking as it was my first real experience of what the industry was like. It didn’t take long for the nerves to go though, as everyone I was working with was extremely professional and friendly. Most of my colleagues were aware that it was my first job in filmmaking; they were really encouraging and shared invaluable advice, allowing me to ease into the process and know exactly what my role meant and my responsibilities within the team.

Why is collaboration so important in the creative industries?

James: Collaboration is integral to the creative industry. It’s how we grow and learn and how we continue to make great work. There is no creative industry without collaboration.

Daniel: Through this experience, I learned that collaboration is the most important part of filmmaking. I worked with everyone in the production team, helping in any way I could, from the art department to lighting!

What was your favourite part of the process?

James: Seeing the students excitement to be on set and their enjoyment of being part of the team is very rewarding and brings back memories of my early experiences in the creative industry.

Daniel: My favourite part of the process was meeting all the different people working in the team and getting to see how everyone worked together to make the final project.

What are your top three tips for successful collaboration?

James: 1. Always keep an open mind and willingness to challenge your own ideas. 2. Go the extra mile, the minimum doesn’t cut it. 3. Be authentic and honest. It’s easy to agree but sometimes you need to challenge and question if your gut tells you to. Ideas fall flat if they are disingenuous.

Daniel: First, take any job or experience that comes your way. Second, even if you are nervous, try and talk to as many people in the industry as possible: even when working it’s a chance to network. Third, when starting as a runner, makes sure to know how to make a good cup of tea or coffee!
