Esther-Grace, a dedicated Songwriting and Music Business student at BIMM Music Institute Birmingham, found her calling during the pandemic. Recognising gaps in her music production knowledge and navigating the industry, Esther-Grace turned to BIMM to hone her skills.
Discovering my passion and choosing BIMM
“I’m Esther-Grace and I study Songwriting and Music Business at BIMM Birmingham. During the pandemic, I discovered a profound love for songwriting and spent countless hours on GarageBand. This new passion revealed significant gaps in my knowledge, especially in music production and navigating the music industry safely and effectively. Through my research, I found that BIMM University’s course was perfect for bridging these gaps and advancing my career.
My interest in BIMM was sparked at a college careers fair. The representatives were friendly and enthusiastic, and their presentations made BIMM seem like an exciting and well-equipped place to study. This impression stuck with me, so when it came time to apply, BIMM was at the top of my list.
Campus life and the Birmingham experience
Moving to student accommodation in Birmingham for my three-year course was a big step. Living there had its ups and downs—thin walls and the stress of securing a spot for the next year were challenging—but it also taught me independence, responsibility and consideration for others.
The campus itself is conveniently close to New Street Station and the city centre. I love the architectural style of the building and all the creative equipment that students can borrow. Living in Birmingham has been a great experience. The city’s efficient transportation, with quick Uber arrivals, and its vibrant, student-heavy atmosphere make it a fantastic place to study music. The simplicity of booking performance gigs and the abundance of venues create a thriving music scene. It’s comforting to be surrounded by peers who are in a similar stage of life, fostering a sense of community and mutual understanding.
Highlights, support and looking ahead
One of the highlights of my course has been performing my songs with a house band. The lecturers at BIMM are cool and fun, making the learning experience enjoyable. The one-on-one sessions with tutors and the creative environment have been incredibly inspiring. Seeing peers do gigs and work with producers motivates me to pursue similar opportunities.
After graduation, I plan to pursue a career as a music artist and content creator full time. My advice to prospective students is to embrace the opportunities to connect with peers. Everyone is learning and feeling a bit awkward, so don’t hesitate to reach out, host jam sessions and attend events.
