As part of our Music Made Us campaign, BIMM student Jade Kelly tells us what inspired her route into music, why she studies vocals and what drew her to London.

Who inspired your route into music?

Growing up, my parents introduced me to the world of music, from Faithless to the Sex Pistols. I was surrounded by so much music as a kid, it was a haven. My dad is a bassist and taught me to play the guitar, and we would always sing Joy Division or Christy Moore. Those two artists gave me my inspiration to get into music. My passion for music grew from there. As I got older, I never thought I was good enough, and that’s when I went back to my roots. I sat with my dad and poured my heart out, and he would always play and sing with me to remind me why I love music. My parents are my biggest fans but the harshest critics; they have always pushed me to pursue my dream as a musician.

What made you choose to study vocals?

I was 16 at secondary school, unsure if it was the best idea for me to study vocals and pursue a career in music. I was about to study politics and English as I was so doubtful of myself. However, my dad sat me down and made me realise that music is all I have. It’s the place I go to when I’m sad or when I’m happy. Singing allows me to share all of my emotions and is hugely therapeutic. I found BIMM and fell in love with it straight away. I couldn’t wait to start my career as a singer/songwriter and learn more about becoming a better musician. I’ve been studying vocals since I was 16 now, and it was the best decision I have made as I don’t think I would be the same musician I am today if I started any later.

Why is London right for you?

I’m originally from London, so it holds a special place in my heart. Whenever I go to a gig, I always go to London. So for me, I knew London would be the place to kickstart my studies and career in the music industry. I always found myself to be an independent person, so being able to take that grown-up step at 16 and travelling into London every day to do something I love was and still is a massive thing for me. BIMM London has shown me so many different things that have helped me in my career, and London is the heart of music in the UK in my eyes. So no doubt, taking my next steps into the music industry would start in London.
