We’re welcoming in the new week with a brand new Track of the Week from BIMM Dublin’s rising post-punks Scattered Ashes.

Take a listen and discover more about the EP below.

What was your inspiration when you began writing the track?

It’s about doubt, faith and reason whilst overcoming the immediate to experience the infinite. I was reading a lot of Kierkegaard at the time, so it ties in with that. This longing for truth.

Are there any artists that inspire you when writing?

Many. But I know for myself (on Parallel Lines) I was listening to a lot of Gang Of Four at the time. I really loved Andy Gill and Jon King’s use of call and response. You can hear that between Eunice and me in the second verse.

What is key to your sound, and how do you make your music stand out?

A sense of urgency and a keen ear for melody.

How does your songwriting process work?

It’s very communal. Typically Tom, Ben or I have a bass line or guitar riff, then Kian and Eunice will add on that. From there, we gradually build until we have a rough shape. I’ll mess around with lyrics on top, almost like a mantra at first.

Describe your sound in 3 words…

Angular, dark, brooding.

How has studying at BIMM helped you develop as an artist?

It helped us immensely. It gave us space to grow as musicians and figure out what we wanted to say as artists. The education you receive instils you with confidence going into the industry. Tutors were fantastic, and the college became a great space for networking.

What’s next for you?

We’re just out of the studio, so we’ll be releasing another two singles come August. After that, we’ll be playing shows in Galway and Dublin and are looking at shows in the UK early next year.
