As part of our Music Made Us campaign, BIMM student Isabella Brinkman tells us what inspired her route into music, why she chose to study Vocals, and what drew her to Hamburg.

Who inspired your route into music?

To be honest, no one in my family is musical in any way. I think the origin came from the fact that I really wanted to learn the piano and so I had my first lessons at five-years-old. In the following years, I just started improvising a bit or writing my own lyrics to existing melodies.

When I was younger, my idol was always Miley Cyrus in Hannah Montana – I know, what a cliché. But she inspired me in the role she had in the Disney series. Because I grew up in a little village with nothing but land around, I kind of got inspired by everything surrounding me. I started to use this creativity and emotions for singing and writing songs.

“I realised very quickly that music is what makes me happy.”

What made you choose to study Vocals?

I realised very quickly that music is what makes me happy and so I knew that this is what I want to do for the rest of my life. When it came to deciding what I wanted to study, I looked at all the possible singing universities.

Originally, I wanted to drop out of school after 10th grade so that I could pursue my goals more quickly, but in the end, I changed my mind, which was a good thing because otherwise, I wouldn’t have gone to BIMM. I chose to study vocals because I want to improve my technique and spend a lot of time on stage.

Why is Hamburg right for you?

I always wanted to get away from home, even when I was very young. I come from a small village where everyone knows everyone and not much happens. My original goal was to go to America to study, but Corona got in the way.

I have chosen Hamburg because I was born in Hamburg, but unfortunately, I can’t remember what it was like back then. I wanted to use the study time to get to know my birth city, and I love it!
