The debut single of BIMM Manchester Songwriter Lissy Taylor came our recently, and with her signature balance of dark and dreamy – we knew it wouldn’t disappoint!
Listen now to our Track of the Week ‘Mayday’ and read all about the track below…
What was your inspiration when you began writing the track?
When I wrote ‘Mayday’ I was fighting an internal war and felt hopelessly misunderstood. I think that there’s strength in recognising that everyone has their own struggles that aren’t always visible. Writing this track helped me understand my own struggles and I hope it will help other people in the same way.
Are there any artists that inspire you when writing?
Cage the elephant, Florence and the machine, Lana del Rey and The Doors.
What is key to your sound and how do you make your music stand out?
My music is an emotional balance of dark and dreamy with lyrical depth inspired by personal experiences. When I lived in the USA I became influenced by American culture which has become a consistent theme in my songwriting. Clash Magazine said that the “Americana flourishes make ‘Mayday’ irresistible” in their headline of my recent premier with them.
How does your songwriting process work?
My songs always come from emotion first. I think if there’s no real emotion at the root of a song, then there’s nothing for anyone to connect with. Secondly, lyrics always take the lead in my songwriting process above everything else.
Describe your sound in 3 words…
Punchy, dreamy, classic.
How has studying at BIMM helped you develop as an artist?
I met all of my band members here!
What’s next for you?
I will be releasing my next new single in spring which will be followed up by the release of my entire first EP.
