This week’s Track of the Week comes from BIMM Institute Brighton students Habit. Their take on indie rock is infectious, with the use of anthemic hooks and unusual time signatures – try and keep up!

Describe your new track in three words….
ballad, storytelling, metamorphosis
What inspired you when writing this track?
The seas of change during that first lockdown, reconnecting with family members and acknowledging parts of my life where there was room for growth.
Are there any artists that inspire you when writing?
I’ve always admired classic songwriting, like that of Stevie Wonder and The Beatles, we tried to channel this through this EP. Another real inspiration to my lyric writing is Arctic Monkeys’ wordsmith, Alex Turner.
What would you say makes your music unique?
I wrote the majority of this EP acoustically with a piano and a guitar. After presenting these songs to the other members of Habit, they brought their own style to the table, resulting in tracks brimming with personality.
Do you have a process you follow when writing a song?
It all depends on what circumstance the song comes to light. With ‘Snakeskin’ I had the main riff figured out on piano already so it was fairly easy to draw the rest of the structure out. With other songs I can be sat on an idea for years before it finds it’s ‘forever home’ and I can put it to rest!
How has studying at BIMM helped you develop as an artist?
Apart from improving all of our technical playing abilities and presenting a well-rounded view of the modern-day music industry, BIMM has helped us make our goals achievable by mapping out what the next steps would be, who can help us in our goals and probably most importantly – what to avoid!
What’s next for you?
After a good reception to our material on the Brighton live scene following a string of headline shows and a festival debut, we plan on taking our music further afield to share our sound with as many people as possible.
