Chiara is a singer-songwriter originally from Italy. Having recently graduated from BIMM Institute Brighton, we caught up with her to talk about her latest track.

Inspired by former BIMM student James Bay, her music is authentic, intimate and talks about the good and bad parts of relationships. Listen below and find out more about her inspirations and songwriting process.

Describe your new track in three words…

Intimate, hopeful and brave.

What inspired you when you wrote this track?

When writing this song, I was in a complicated point of a significant relationship that was kept at a distance by the pandemic, I was also highly doubting my choices and all the work done with my music lately. Lovely moment.

After a while, I understood that it was just me who was mining the relationship and my life by focusing on problems and not accepting things. Nobody has the time they think they have on this earth, and still, we waste it in too many doubts and fights. We do not have the privilege of time. This is the main meaning of the song.

Are there any artists that inspire you when writing?

I listen to a lot of different music, though lately, my writing has been inspired by artists like Emilie Nicolas and James Bay. Many people tell me that they always hear a little bit of Avril Lavigne in my singing and writing. I take it as a compliment, as she’s been one of my favourite artists since I was four years old.

What would you say makes your music unique?

I can say that a unique feature of my music is that it is authentic. When writing a song, I never want to build it around how well it’s going to go commercially or how many streams it will get. I just make choices based on what I feel and what my closest collaborators feel, no matter how hazardous or unpopular they can be.

How has studying at BIMM helped you develop as an artist?

Studying at BIMM was an experience that I really don’t regret, even with all the highs and lows that appear when living abroad for the first time. These three years at BIMM and in Brighton made me establish so many bonds, and they definitely formed me and made me grow as a person and an artist.

What’s next for you?

What’s next? I am a person that doesn’t plan too much as I like to see what life offers me.

For the near future, I am planning to travel for about a month outside of Europe, as I feel I need time to discover new places and regain inspiration. Within the next year, I am thinking of moving to a northern European country to pursue my music career and find a job in the industry.
