Who What Why: Clara Charlier

30th November 2020

As part of our Music Made Us campaign, BIMM student Clara Charlier tells us what inspired her route into music, why she chose to study Music Business, and what drew her to Brighton.

Who inspired your route into music?

I’m not sure who is the right answer here. Of course, I have immense respect for many musicians, songwriters, artists and industry professionals. Music has influenced me in many ways while growing up. However, I would say that the music discovery kid programme in Bernried (Germany) was integral in establishing my journey with music.

This programme was not only cherished in the small Bernried village, but it was a must for all kindergarten kids. With a new instrument being introduced every week, I first got to discover my love for piano and all that was music at the age of four years old. That was my first entryway into my musical journey.

What made you choose to study Music Business?

My sixth form college helped me choose to study Music Business at university. Having always had a passion for music, I had always invested my time in music departments across all my schools.

Luckily, one day, I was put in charge of stage managing a school music festival and that’s when I had my ‘lightbulb’ moment. I had never put much thought to the music industry as a business entity until then. However, that single event made me realise that this was a career path I could pursue. It was a game-changer, and I never looked back.

Why is Brighton right for you?

Brighton was the obvious choice as it’s a gorgeous, vibrant city! Not only is Brighton the founding college for BIMM, but it is also a seaside town with a strong music culture. From my first Open Day, I fell in love with this city. Still now, I am trying to find a way to delay moving to the music industry’s capital in order to stay just a little bit longer in this amazing city. I would recommend Brighton time and time again!
