To kickstart the new week, we’ve got an awesome EP of the Week from BIMM Dublin Graduate Cian Goddo, AKA Somebody’s Child.
We’ve been following their releases for the past few years, and we’re so excited to see this collection of songs released into the world! Take a listen to the EP, and discover more about the story behind the release below.
What was your inspiration when you began writing the EP?
I spent some time in Japan in late 2019. I was really inspired by the culture, lights and colours, so I chose a similar visual theme for the EP, which I thought represented the sound. Musically, the EP is inspired by a mixture of 80s alternative music and more contemporary indie-rock stuff.
The lyrical theme kind of came together pretty naturally, whereby each track has its own individual meaning, but together they represent some common thoughts and feelings I’ve had throughout my early 20s, hence the name of the EP – ’20-something’. I was never trying to force anything with these tracks; they just felt as though they belong together.
Are there any artists that inspire you when writing?
Throughout this EP, I was conscious to be writing more in the style of what I would listen to regularly, so War On Drugs and The National were certainly an influence at the time. On the other hand, we were also making an effort to get into some 80s music (with bands like The Cure and Joy Division), who we hadn’t spent too much with before, so it was exciting exploring a different soundscape as well.
What is key to your sound and how do you make your music stand out?
I pride myself on not being confined to any particular genre or style, and I like to keep an element of unpredictability in the music. That being said, I’m aware that my songwriting and voice will usually tie things together.
How does your songwriting process work?
I generally start with a chord progression or riff, which would set the mood of the song. Then, while forming a melody and tone, some lyrics would pop into my head that would define the theme of the song.
Then, using a balance of stream of consciousness and logic, I try to let the song write itself, for lack of a better phrase. I’m always interested in trying new things though; I’m hoping to try adopting personas when writing in the future or starting with lyrics/themes.

How has studying at BIMM helped you develop as an artist?
BIMM gave me the time to learn more about myself as a person, and as an artist.
What’s next for you?
We’re looking at signing a deal with a label and getting another EP out by the end of the year!
