Love is in the air, and what better time for indulging in some on-screen romance? From heartwarming romances to tear-jerking dramas and empowering tales of singledom, our selection has something for everyone – whether you’re sharing it with a special someone or celebrating your single status. Happy Valentine’s Day!

One Day (2024)

If you’re craving a British drama with a blend of heartache and hope, look no further than One Day which was released on Netflix just in time for Valentine’s. Based on David Nicholls’ beloved novel and its 2011 film adaptation, this series delivers a fresh take on the 20-year friendship of Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew, portrayed with incredible chemistry by Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall.

As their characters’ lives unfold over the years, you’ll find yourself immersed in their journey, brought vividly to life on screen. But be warned, to use the title from Ambika Mod’s previous acclaimed series: this is going to hurt…

Fire Island (2022)

Inspired by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Fire Island follows a group of gay friends who travel to Fire Island, New York, only for their care-free vacation to become complicated by classism and romance.

An instant queer classic, Fire Island manages to approach heavy topics such as social expectations, stereotypes, and racism with humour, tension, and a lot of heart thanks to its witty screenplay and the talents of its brilliant ensemble cast.

Someone Great (2019)

Someone Great is a must-watch romantic comedy that beautifully explores the complexities of love, loss, and the enduring power of female friendship. With a perfect blend of sentimentality and humour, the film delves into themes of growth and self-discovery amidst heartbreak.

Gina Rodriguez, Brittany Snow, and DeWanda Wise all deliver standout performances, infusing their characters with undeniable depth and authentic affection. What sets the film apart is its refreshing departure from typical romcom tropes, choosing instead to challenge viewers to prioritise self-identity and self-love. Relatable and poignant, this journey will leave you laughing, crying and, ultimately, feeling uplifted.

If Beale Street Could Talk (2023)

Written and directed by Barry Jenkins, If Beale Street Could Talk is a stunning adaptation of the James Baldwin novel, offering an emotional cinematic experience in a non-linear fashion. Visually striking, nuanced, and intimate, the performances by KiKi Layne, Stephan James, and Regina King are a force to be reckoned with.

The film has garnered widespread critical acclaim and numerous award nominations, including Best Supporting Actress wins for King at both the Academy Awards and Golden Globes, solidifying its place as a modern masterpiece in romantic drama.

Palm Springs (2020)

Easily one of our favourite indie rom-coms of the last few years, Palm Springs is a film best watched with no prior knowledge of the storyline- so much so that we’re not even going to embed the trailer.

Available for streaming on Amazon Prime and Hulu, this gem has garnered well-deserved recognition, with nominations for two Golden Globes and a win for Best Comedy at the 26th Critics’ Choice Awards.

Behind its fun premise lies an offbeat, endearing film that packs a heavier emotional punch than expected thanks to its incredible performances by Cristin Milioti, Andy Samberg, and J.K. Simmons. We seriously can’t recommend this one enough.
