Keira is studying BA Performing Arts at our Brighton campus. With a deep passion for singing, dancing and acting, she is on the Contemporary Musical Theatre pathway of the course and her dream is to perform on the West End.

Falling in love with theatre

“My love for performing started early. I vividly remember watching The Voice and telling my parents I wanted to be on it someday. As I progressed through school, I seized every opportunity to hone my craft – from dance lessons to school musicals and local theatre productions. When it came time to choose a university, Brighton stood out. Not only did it offer intensive training in singing, dancing and acting, but it was also located in Brighton – one of my dream places to live.

The audition

The application process for drama school can be daunting, especially when your friends are applying to universities that don’t require auditions. However, the team made the experience enjoyable and put me at ease from the start. I prepared two contrasting songs – ‘Mister Snow’ from Carousel and ‘Someday’ from The Wedding Singer – and participated in acting, ballet and jazz workshops. The day was filled with nervous excitement, and I even met some girls who are now my close friends.

When I received the call offering me a place, I was overjoyed. After attending a taster day that solidified my decision, I eagerly accepted the offer, ready to embark on this new chapter.

Life in vibrant Brighton

Moving away from family was a big step, but living in a student house with other Brighton campus students has been an incredible experience. I’ve stayed in the same house throughout my time here, creating a real sense of home. To any new students feeling nervous about the move, remember that most of your year group is in the same boat. Reach out to people you meet at audition days and events – you’ll have friendly faces waiting for you when you arrive in Brighton.

Brighton itself is a dream come true. The sea is a constant source of joy, whether it’s swimming in the summer or taking walks on cooler days. I’ve also found a wonderful student community at St. Peters church, which has helped me connect with students from various courses across Brighton.

Supportive tutors and state-of-the-art facilities

The facilities at Circle Studios are top-notch, especially the dance studios. I often find myself practising in these spaces before and after classes, grateful for the freedom to use them. But it’s not just the facilities that makes our campus special – it’s the people.

Our tutors go above and beyond in every way. I feel seen and known by all the core staff, which creates a safe and nurturing environment. In my first year, one of our dance teachers gave us personal feedback after every jazz lesson and encouraged us to have one-to-one tutorials. Her tough love and encouragement have been instrumental in my progress.

Unparalleled performance opportunities

One of my fondest memories is being part of Studio 10, a singing group led by our wonderful tutor Faye. We performed at Brighton Fringe, an experience that allowed me to bond with students from other years and expand my musical repertoire.

Looking towards the spotlight

As I approach my final year, I’m filled with excitement for the future. My dream is to perform in the West End – perhaps as Anna in Frozen or Sophie in Mamma Mia! Our course is preparing us for the industry in every way possible. We’ve had audition classes with professionals from shows like Wicked, Guys & Dolls, and The Play That Goes Wrong. In our third year, we’ll have Agent Panel Days and an Agent Showcase, which will give us real opportunities to kickstart our careers.

Advice for applicants

To anyone considering applying, I say this: it’s worth the risk. Yes, a career in musical theatre can seem daunting, but if it’s your passion, pursue it wholeheartedly. I’ve never worked harder or been challenged more than I have on this course, but I’ve also never felt more supported or certain that I’m on the right path. Every day, I get to do what I love, and for that, I’m incredibly grateful. After all, doing what you love is always worth the risk.”

Keira’s passion and drive is inspirational to anyone considering a career in the performing arts. Her time at our Brighton campus has been transformative, providing a solid foundation for a lifetime on the stage.
