On 18th May, The Kooks, came to Berlin to play a sold-out gig at Columbia Halle – one of Berlin’s most sought-after venues. Our BIMM Berlin students were given the opportunity to join the band for a pre-show meet and greet, followed by exclusive access to the band’s soundcheck. The Kooks’ frontman, Luke Pritchard, invited students Daniel Rivera de Ycaza and Lisa Uebel up on stage with him to play drums as they practised.
The multi-million-selling indie band began life as students at BIMM Brighton in 2002, before releasing their debut album ‘Inside In/Inside Out’ in 2006 which was a huge success, being certified four-times Platinum in the UK and reaching No. 2 in the charts. Its 2008 follow-up ‘Konk’ went straight into the UK charts at No. 1, and they’ve since released a further two UK Top 20 albums. Across their career, they’ve had five UK Top 20 singles, including three UK Top 10 hits.
Guests and Events Co-ordinator Christoph Boychers said: “Luke was so friendly and down to earth. He made the students feel really welcome and special. He chatted to them about their musical careers and courses, before showing them how it was done on stage.”
A number of very lucky students were then given free tickets to the sold-out show… so it was a pretty good day for everyone involved!
