Review – MOONOVERSUN @ Truck Festival

It’s always a good sign when an artist is tricky to pigeonhole. MOONOVERSUN purvey an eclectic mash-up of Grimes-esque vocals and wonky future beats, tastefully delivered through a wall of glossy synthesisers, off-kilter samples and topped off with bags of attitude.

From the moment they take to the stage it’s clear the band (consisting of Isaac and Sofia) know exactly how to hold an audience’s attention. Surrounded by pink balloons and glowing mannequin busts, the pair take turns bouncing off each other – Both musically and literally – whilst exuding the same kind of rambunctious onstage chemistry as Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince.

Jumping back-and-forth from behind the drum-kit to center stage, Issac’s stage presence could be likened to that of a young Patrick Wolf, his wry smile juxtaposed with a dark, fevered intensity. His drumming however, sits firmly within the self-dubbed “wonky-pop” category, his head flailing back and forth as he beats out fractured rhythms with ecstatic enthusiasm.

Balancing the equation, Sofia (who looks like an extra straight out of the Fifth Element) sways and dances across the stage with child-like abandon, flitting from r’n’b vocals to glitchy synth melodies whilst looking like she’s loving every second.

As the band work their way through a set-list of absolute bangers, their onstage dynamic teeters brilliantly on the edge of mayhem and by the time current single “Flux” powers it’s way through the room, the audience is 100% behind them.

Despite their tender years, they hold the stage with the kind of magnetic presence of seasoned pros, and if it wasn’t for the faint smell of cowpat’s drifting through the air, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in a late-night warehouse rave in the shady depths of Berlin – The subby bassline’s and popping rhythms perfectly suited to the cavernous reverb of the converted barn.

Like any artist worth their salt (and despite their onstage openness) MOONOVERSUN play their cards close to their chest, hinting only very briefly at the prospect of a new release in the not-too-distant future. Fingers crossed the band sustains the boundless energy and creative originality that has got them to this point.
If they can, then it’s surely only a matter of time before they break through to bigger and better things.
