My name is Scott Williamson, I’m a 22 year old singer-songwriter from Dublin and a recent graduate of BIMM.
How did you get started?
Born into such a musical family, I think it was inevitable that I was going to pick up an instrument at some point. Following my dad and brother’s footsteps, I started playing guitar when I was 10 and it all kind of snowballed from there. I was exposed to so many different genres of music and over the years started messing around with various instruments like the banjo, mandolin, piano and even clarinet for a brief time. I loved trying to play as many instruments as I could which paid off when it came to my own songwriting and recording.
Why Did You Choose BIMM?
When it came to choosing college courses, music was the only thing on my mind. I like all kinds of music but all the courses I had looked up were heavily based on classical and traditional music which didn’t appeal to me at all at the time. That’s when I found BIMM Dublin. I was more interested in writing songs and BIMM was the only course providing that. It was a no-brainer!
What has been/was your highlight at BIMM?
The best part of BIMM had to be the people who go there. With songwriting, it can be rather daunting playing original music to a room full of people you don’t know but everybody is so supportive, encouraging, friendly, and seriously talented. As well as that, you get to meet so many like-minded people all equally as crazy about music as you are. I felt right at home.
What advice would you give future BIMM students?
The best advice I can give is to make the most of your time there. Test yourself by playing an instrument you normally wouldn’t, take part in as many auditions for either Live & Lyrical or End of Term, and play with as many different people as you can. Be pro-active, get involved in everything, be open to new things, and the main thing is to have fun because the time absolutely flies!
