Can you introduce yourself?
I am Khaylan, a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. I write and arrange songs, sing, and play the guitar for my solo project – which you could define as alternative/progressive rock – but I also play drums, bass, violin, viola, and a bit of keys here and there. I’m originally from Italy but I’ve been in the UK for 5 years now.
How did you get started?
I started off my musical journey by playing violin. I am classically trained; I attended the conservatory of music in Italy and played in orchestras, chamber music ensembles, and folk bands before finally joining my first band as a singer. I mostly did covers for a while but by the end of my BMus I was writing my own songs and I decided to start my own project with music I fully create from start to finish.
Why did you choose BIMM London?
I was blown away by the teachers’ curricula and I really wanted to become part of the network that gravitates around the school.
What have you been doing since graduating?
I have started my own solo project; writing and releasing my debut EP “Return To Sender” which features some of the songs I wrote for my BIMM final performance exam. We shot a music video alongside my debut single ‘Falling’, which I got to present on London Live News. Backed up by my excellent band, I have been performing in London for about a year now. I will be back in the recording studio in May to record my next single.
Is there any advice you would give to future BIMM students?
Be ready to be pro-active. Learn to develop your own views, ideas, and strategies; this business is everything but a one way road. There’s not a formula or a safe path but a lot of dedication, hard work, and passion (and a bit of luck 😉 )
