The BIMM 2022 Freshers’ Guide to Birmingham

18th July 2022

It’s not long now until the new BIMM academic year begins, which means BIMM Institute Birmingham Freshers’ Week is just around the corner! To help you arrive and settle at BIMM Birmingham, graduate Felix Shepherd has written a handy guide exploring the best bits this city offers for new students.

Music is a massive part of why you are at BIMM Institute, so it would be rude of me not to include some of my favourite venues and jam nights in the city. Kicking things off, Neighbourhood Jam Night is a must; it’s pretty much an evening of insanely passionate people playing music, which is a must-see even if you don’t feel like performing!

There is always a show happening in Birmingham. You are really spoilt for choice sometimes. My favourite places to play and watch live music are The Institute, Dead Wax, The Hare and Hounds, and last but not least, The Sunflower Lounge. It’s guaranteed that you’ll bump into another BIMM Institute student. Better still, they’ll be the one on stage!

Food and Drink

I can’t lie, I love to eat out, and there are some insanely underrated spots in Brum. Comptoir Libanais in Grand Central is at the top of my list, serving up the best Lebanese food in the city. I am also a burger guy, so next has to be Original Patty Men, on the outskirts of Digbeth. This burger joint will put all other burgers to shame!

Birmingham also has many clubs, but SNOBS is my favourite. The Ruin is a top tier pub, and The Mill holds amazing dance events throughout the year, which are always amazing to check out with your classmates!

If clubbing isn’t your thing, then check out Broadway Plaza towards Five Ways for all of your cinema, bowling and eating needs. New Street also has a pretty cool Odeon. There’s a crazy new mini golf place that’s just popped up inside of the Bullring. It’s definitely worth the wait (and they have a student discount).

Aside from this, we are super lucky in Birmingham to have a really multicultural society. With this comes various celebrations such as Pride Festival, Simmer Down Festival and Chinese New Year, just to name a few. I highly recommend getting involved with these things and just exploring the world around you! There is honestly so much to do in Birmingham that I couldn’t fit it all in here. There really is something for everyone!
