My first year at BIMM Birmingham

We first met BIMM Birmingham Music Business undergraduate Jessica Brunt back in July of 2017 with our Meet The Student blog post. Now that she’s completed the first year of her degree, we felt it was a good time to catch up and reflect on her experience of the course so far.

Can describe your BIMM experience so far in 3 words?

  • Hectic (in a good way)
  • Insightful
  • Awesome

What’s been the highlight of your Music Business Degree so far?

There has been loads of good stuff happening, but working at The Guitar Show has to be my highlight. Our Concert Promotion and Tour Management tutor Jason Hunt, asked if we wanted to work at the show he runs. It was such an awesome experience! I got to see how an event of that size was run first-hand, network with all the exhibitors and got to meet Dan Hawkins from The Darkness.

Do you have a favourite tutor and why?

I don’t have a favourite, they’re all great! Each tutor brings their own individual perspective to teaching and the industry. It’s great to get different insights from all of them.

Any advice you have been given so far that has really stood out?

As a student at BIMM you are inundated with advice everyday… it’s hard to keep track of it all. However, my favourite piece (which is repeated constantly by all our tutors) is “throw yourself into every opportunity”.

BIMM will give you so many opportunities, whether it’s work experience, masterclasses, internships, whatever. The more you get involved with, the more experience you’ll get. It’s also a good chance to apply what you’ve learned in lectures to real life.

What’s the best thing about studying in Birmingham?

I love that you can see the music industry within the city growing and expanding around you. Birmingham is such a creative city anyway, it’s just great to see students at your uni helping develop it even further.

If someone was looking to join BIMM Birmingham next year, what would you say to them?

Definitely do it, I’ve loved every part of my first year. BIMM has helped me develop as a person, helped me expand my business, helped me gain more experience in different areas of the industry, the list goes on.
