Meet the Students: Colm Kennedy

Introduce yourself…

Hey. I’m Colm Kennedy. I was a Music Business student at BIMM Dublin 2018/2019 – the first year they ran the course in Ireland.

You’ve just completed the BIMM Dublin Diploma in Music Business, how did you find it?

It was a great course! I would highly recommend it for anyone who’s looking to get in to the industry. The lecturers have been inside the industry for years and understand how difficult it is to manoeuvre around it. I got a lot of help with my career from my lecturers, Alan, James and Aaron.
Regardless of the material you learn, you are in a room with the people who are going to be the future of the music industry. I met a huge amount of people from the course; people I still work with at the moment.

Do you have a stand-out moment of the year?

I suppose the stand out moment for me was when I was offered an internship through BIMM to become the Digital Marketing Intern for the IYMA’s for an event in Croke Park. I ran all their socials and created content for promotional purposes in the hope of helping the event to sell out (which they very nearly did!). I learned a lot of skills that I can now apply to running my own management company: Red Exit Management.

How are you applying what you learnt on the course to your music industry career?

Well, I was already an independent artist manger before I attended BIMM, but from speaking to my lecturers and other people involved in the industry, I kind of realised that things have to be done a certain way. An artist I work with at the moment is starting to make a name for themselves and this has been made possible through the knowledge I gained at BIMM, to an extent.

Can you tell us a bit about the artists you are working with?

At the moment, the act I’m most excited about is a great new indie band called Columbia. They’re a group of young lads from Mitchelstown in Cork and the energy and drive they have is just MENTAL!! They’ve just been confirmed for Indiependence Festival and they’ve gotten a few nice support slots in the past (Aslan, Frank and Walters, Fallen Lights). We actually just got home from Liverpool Sound City a few weeks ago, where we closed out one of the stages. That was some experience!
We just released their debut single ‘Shout It Out Loud’ through AWAL, which is getting a bit of attention. It’s exciting. Tough, but exciting.

What are you most looking forward to in the coming months?

The next few months are going to be fairly important for me and my artists. Without giving too much away, I have a fair few things in the works at the moment that I can hopefully announce pretty soon. But I suppose I’m looking forward to getting more embedded into the Irish music scene and making a name for myself as an independent artist manager whilst establishing and developing my artists. I’m hoping to get the Columbia boys a slot at Irish Music Week with Angela Dorgan this year which of course would be HUGE!

Having been part of the BIMM Marketing Team since 2016, Sarah has been working in Social Media Marketing since 2013. She Graduated the University of Hertfordshire in BA(Hons) Photography and Media Business and has a keen interest in the power of social media.
