What is Off The Record?
Off The Record is a multi-venue live music event and conference in the heart of Manchester’s Northern Quarter. Following suit with previous years, trusted national curators, including Everything Everything, Huw Stephens, Rob Da Bank, Ana Matronic, Fickle Friends and The Orielles have nominated the artists performing in the evening showcase across eight legendary venues all within a 5-minute walk from each other.
By day, the music conference will feature the new guard of the music industry, including a special songwriting masterclass with Doves, along with an In-Conversation with Simon Parkes, founder of renowned live music venue Brixton Academy and in-Conversation with Bernard Butler, plus lots more industry panel topics!
Off The Record is all about innovative ideas, new music and emerging artists. Off The Record is a collaboration between three of the UK’s premier music festivals; Sound City, Kendal Calling and Bluedot festival.
What made you set up the event?
We believe that new music is at a creative high and for most emerging artists a captivating live performance comes well before they step foot in a professional recording studio. We want to capture the thrill of seeing something truly special and new on stage for the first time with no preconceptions. We also want people to come and discover who their new favourite band is, while enjoying the best pub crawl to help us end the festival season in style. Off the Record is the perfect place to network, get your foot in the music industry door and listen to new music!
Do you have an aim?
The key aims for Off The Record are; to celebrate new music, capturing artists at a very special, vivid and all-too-brief point in their careers, give artists a platform to be heard, as well as giving people the opportunity to discover more about the music industry through key interesting panel talks and masterclasses.
How would you describe the music scene in Manchester?
The music scene is fantastic! There are so many bands & artists that have grown and nurtured their talent right in the heart of Manchester and are now doing headline shows throughout the UK and beyond. The city’s musical heritage and unique atmosphere means the music scene is always buzzing with new and emerging talent, so it is great that Off The Record can provide a further platform for those rising stars that are bursting onto the scene.
Any advice you would give to musicians?
Hone your talent! Know your style, and how as an artist or band you want to be defined. Say yes to all the initial small gigs and network as much as possible.
