BIMM London alumnus Joe Mutton has landed a fantastic gigging opportunity as drummer and musical director for Sarah Close, who recently signed a major record deal with Parlophone/Warner.

The bliss-pop singer/songwriter who originally hails from the Isle Of Wight is heading off on a brief tour of the UK and Ireland at the end of this month. So, we caught up with Joe ahead of time to hear about his overall experience at BIMM, as well as ask what advice he’d offer to new students.

First though, check out Sarah’s latest single “Caught Up” here.

What made you apply to study at BIMM London?

“I originally auditioned for a number of different music courses around the UK but London just seemed like the place to be, so it had to be BIMM!”

What performance experience had you gained prior to attending BIMM?

“Before coming to BIMM I was playing a lot of private functions and wedding gigs, which carried on throughout my course.”

Which course did you study, which module/s did you find most useful, and why?

“I studied the BMUS Popular Music Performance, which is a 3 year degree. LPW (Live Performance Workshop) was probably the most useful module for me, wherein you get to address a different track each week: prepping it, performing it, then moving on! It’s great practice for when you get onto a ‘real’ gig setting!”

How did the session with Sarah Close first come about? Could you describe how the audition process went?

“Michelle Humphries (Events, Guests and Artist Development Manager) put my name forward for an audition with Sarah. There were 9 drummers auditioning alongside me, I think 4 of us were from BIMM. Eventually, only 2 were called back for a 2nd audition, and I got a call the next morning from the MD offering me the gig!”

What advice would you offer a student looking to follow in your footsteps to become a sessions musician or MD?

“Just get out there and get playing, you get out what you put in!”

We’re extremely proud of Joe’s latest success and wish him all the very best of his work with Sarah and beyond.
