How did GEM Events begin?

GEM Events started as a project for my dissertation. I was sitting in Pro-Project class and was asked what I was passionate about. That’s when the idea for Gender Equality in Music (GEM) came about, as gender equality is something I’ve been interested in for

How long have you been running?

We’ve put on one event so far, but hope to do lots more in the future. We’ve got all our promotion and marketing platforms up and running, and have made lots of contacts, so we hope to be putting on more gigs over summer!

Can you describe your ethos as an events company?

GEM Events promotes and creates music events that celebrate all genders working within the music industry. Our mission is to highlight gender discrimination in the industry while simultaneously showcasing the breadth of talent already working in it. We also fundraise for selected local charities and organisations. As our motto goes: “We are here to educate, inspire and support”.

You recently held an event at The Peer Hat, how did that go?

The event was a real success! Everyone who performed was amazing and so supportive of each other. The event as a whole had a beautifully empowering and supportive atmosphere – it was brilliant to be part of. We raised approximately £100 for the charities The Proud Trust and The Fawcett Society and it was just a really fun night!

How can people get involved in your events?

At GEM Events, we believe in collaboration and teamwork. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, or wants to volunteer at our next event, they can contact me via Facebook or via email at [email protected]
