Charlie spent 11 years in London working in event production for The Big Chill festival. He’s now the drummer of UK indie band The Wedding Present, has played hundreds of live shows across the world, and owns his own events company. He moved to Berlin in the summer of 2011 and continued to tour, plus started tour managing various other bands as well. Charlie then joined BIMM in 2015, keen to pass on his experience to the next generation of event organisers – our Music Business students!
So, here in all its glory is Charlie Layton’s Guide To Berlin:
If your friends were visiting Berlin for one weekend only, where would you tell them to go?
I’m really fascinated by the history of Berlin, so I’d take them to the Berlin Wall Memorial at Bernauer Strasse, followed by a museum: either Stasi HQ or the prison. Then a walk through the Tiergarten to the Siegessäule for the great views out from the top. Sunday would be brunch followed by a Berliner Unterwelten tour and then a drink at a bar along the Spree.
Where’s your favourite place to eat in Berlin and why?
I have loads of favourite restaurants dotted all over the city. My go-to when I’m at BIMM is No Hablo Español Burritos. Also, Berlin is a great place for Vietnamese food.
Where’s your favourite place to listen to music in Berlin and why?
At home! Or at friends’ houses. Somewhere where there’s food. I love listening to music and cooking. I love having a drink and being surrounded by good company and conversation.
What makes Berlin so different to London, where you’re from?
Its size. Even though Berlin is spread over a large area, it still feels really small to me. I walk pretty much everywhere and love that I’m able to do that.
