What was the inspiration/is there a story behind your track?
‘Boy Listen’ is a response to one-sided relationships, and the frustration felt by the one who seems to be putting in all the effort. The song’s protagonist is completely infatuated with her significant other, but is at her wit’s end because he seems not to care about any of the emotional aspects of the relationship, only caring about the sexual side. She wishes he would just listen to her pleas and embrace her as a person, rather than a means for sexual pleasure.
How did you write this song?
This song was a collaborative effort between myself (Tosin Bankole), guitarist Taran Plouzane-Brady and songwriter Lisa Rogers. Taran came to the group with the chorus, which was developed and added to by Lisa. The product lacked some flair, which was supplied by myself, as well as a new middle 8 section.
Do you have a favourite line / section of the song?
Our favourite line is probably “I am not a book you can take from the library / This ain’t no DIT!”
Can you describe your sound in three words?
Groovy, funky deliciousness
How do you feel your sound has developed from studying at BIMM?
Being a band formed entirely in BIMM, our sound has been entirely shaped here. Everyone’s technical level is very high, which allows for some very interesting music, while our songwriting and arranging can be as complicated or as simple as we choose.
What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?
Being around so many high-quality musicians, all of whom are willing to help and support each other, is a very special thing and something we’re all extremely grateful for!
