Behind the Track

Behind the Track: Thumper

17th April 2018

What was the inspiration/is there a story behind your track?

The song was written over a period of about a year. It started off as a 2 minute waltz, but gradually morphed into the scuzzfest you hear now. I guess it’s about growing up, whatever that means.

Do you have a favourite line/section of the song?

I spent the guts of a year zeroing down on the lyrics in this one, so I’m pretty attached to every line. That said, I think my favourite thing about AFL is the long musical sections. It’s always my instinct to fill every section with words, so I’m proud of the parts where we gave the music space to talk.

Can you describe your sound in three words?

Noise vs Melody

How do you feel your sound has developed since you Graduated from BIMM?

Previously a big part of our sound was the super lo-fi production on our records. For this single, and the upcoming EP, we went into an actual studio and tried to make the songs sing a bit more. Dan Fox from Girl Band produced this record, and he was a huge help in graduating from lo-fi to something more widescreen, without losing any of the guts.

Anything exciting coming up over the next few months you can share?

We’re currently putting the finishing touches on our follow up single, which is a 7 minute space jam. Then we’ll have the full EP out later in the year. Apart from that we’ll be at Vantastival, Sea Sessions and most major Irish festivals this summer, most of which are yet to be announced! Keep your ear to the ground.
