What was the inspiration/is there a story behind your track?
This one is simple; we wrote Parallels halfway through my first year at BIMM. Joining a college consisting of mostly musicians was frightening for me. The song is about having that constant doubt that my voice isn’t good enough; I kept comparing myself to other vocalists on my course, it almost felt like a competition. But in the end I realised that everyone at BIMM is good in their own right and that there’s no point bringing yourself down. Everyone here is different and we wouldn’t be here if we weren’t good.
What did your process involve?
In terms of writing, our guitarist records his ideas at home and forwards them for the rest of us to complete. When it comes to me, I like writing my lyrics before I write the vocal melody. It can be challenging to find a good placement for them but it’s more fun that way.
Do you have a favourite line/section of the song?
My favourite line would have to be ‘seeking her foreign answers’ – I love the harmony between vocals and the instrumentation.
Can you describe your sound in three words?
Dark, electrifying, and bittersweet.
What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?
For me, it’s that I got the chance to discover myself and learn who I am as an artist. Studying at BIMM has been a challenging but very defining experience – and very eye-opening too. Another great thing about BIMM is that you get to meet a lot of talented musicians and people in general – you never know when you’ll need them. The more connections you have the better – that’s definitely a fact!
