With a number of tracks already to his name, BIMM Berlin student Christian Klippenstein performs as deep house artist Sames – and on this occasion, he’s teamed up with fellow BIMM Berlin student Daria Kickler to create the raw and seductive song ‘Lies’. The two met through friends at BIMM, and have developed a great artistic partnership ever since. Here they discussed the track’s development process with us, and the networking benefits of studying at BIMM Berlin.
WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION/IS THERE A STORY BEHIND YOUR TRACK?
Christian: I was jamming with my roommates and we recorded the guitar in my studio, which is where the song was created originally. I sent Daria the instrumental and we recorded the vocals the next day. Everything went pretty smoothly.
Daria: The lyrics of ‘Lies’ are inspired by an encounter I had in a club where the attraction levels were way too high to play it cool. It basically says ‘I know you want me and I want you, so why don’t we skip the subtle flirting and the mind games – let’s just go for it’. It’s about embracing an inner instinct without questioning the intention behind it.
WHAT DID YOUR PROCESS INVOLVE?
Christian: We recorded acoustic basslines for the song, to add more of a live sound to it. There are barely any electronic sounds in the song, which is what we were going for. We had two studio sessions recording the vocals, but the first ones we recorded ended up being the chorus of the track. After I mixed and mastered everything, I made the cover and prepared for the song’s release.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LINE/SECTION OF THE SONG?
Christian: My favourite section is probably the second chorus after the bridge, when Daria is singing along with the drop. Everything comes together very naturally at this point.
CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND IN THREE WORDS?
Christian: Chill. Hard. Sexy.
WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT STUDYING AT BIMM BERLIN?
Christian: Connecting with people – this is initially what I came to BIMM for and I have certainly not been disappointed.
