What was the inspiration & story behind your track?
‘Off My Mind’ is about escapism and fantasy. The protagonist in the song sings of a far away land beyond the horizon, a haven free of the burdens that occupy her mind. It’s a dreamy concept. The intro of the song is a recording I took on my phone of a beach near where I’m from in Kerry called Rossbeigh. The sound is actually placed in numerous parts of the song in the background as an extra texture. I recorded it the last time I was home, that’s when the idea of the song started to arrange itself in my head. I wanted to replicate the different textures of the ocean, with the washy pre-chorus’ and disjointed chorus’.
What did your process involve?
The song started out acoustically on my piano, but I wrote it with a big arrangement in mind. Myself and Ed (Phelan) wrote all the music and parts before bringing it to Mick, the producer. He has a really cool collection of synths and we used a lot of them, I wanted to create a big wall of sound in the chorus’. The song really came to life when we started production with him.
Can you describe your sound in three words?
Hmm… Meaty alt pop.
What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?
The best thing about studying at BIMM is the people that you meet. I feel so lucky to have met and gotten to know so many great people through college. It’s wonderful to be surrounded by like minded people all the time.
