What was the inspiration behind your track?
I’m from a pretty conservative Indian family so I’m always being badgered to do something ‘proper’ and to ‘grow up’! The song was pretty much an unapologetic middle finger to that! I wanted to write something that held nothing back if that makes sense..?
What did your process involve?
I usually write lyrics and melody first but with ‘As I Am’ it was the other way around. I somehow ended up writing that riff which just sounded so mean and gnarly that I figured this had to be the one – I went rogue so to speak hahaha! It took a while to figure out the chord progression for the verse because of the little shift thing going on which was an odd experience – working chords to a lyric’s melody but I’ll definitely try it again!
Is there are story behind the track?
Erm..pretty much that really. Oddly enough there is usually a random story behind my songs but this was one that kind of happened whilst just sitting at home one evening! Saying that, the saxophone thing was a bit random. I hadn’t planned it but I bumped into an old friend and we ended up jamming. He just sounded so good I decided it needed to go on the record. When we laid the lead guitar over the top, the two sounded brilliant together – like they were dipping and diving and playing with each other so to speak!
Can you describe your sound in three words?
Oooh ok…. Cheeky…Catchy….Simple.
What’s the best thing about studying at BIMM?
I’d have to say the support and contacts. They really do look out for you, both in the academic sense but also the wider industry as well. Plus they have the contacts to support that too which makes such a difference.
