Finnish student Molly Mae’s latest track ‘Wanna Be Better’ is a fresh, confident release, mixed, mastered and produced by a fellow BIMM student. The song’s contemplative lyrics not only showcase Molly Mae’s impressive vocal range, but will likely have you deep in thought about relationships, too. Molly Mae took a moment out of her happily jam-packed schedule to chat with us about her song, her distinctive sound and her experience of BIMM so far.
WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION/IS THERE A STORY BEHIND THE TRACK?
I didn’t have a clear inspiration or meaning for the song originally. I only knew I wanted to write a song with a strong hook and a catchy melody – something that would be easy to remember after listening to it once. The song ended up being about self-reflection and wanting to improve for your significant other.
WHAT DID YOUR PROCESS INVOLVE?
It started with me sitting by my keyboard trying to find the right chord progression and vocal melody for the vibe I was going for. Once the melody was done, the lyrics came to me very naturally. I then sent a phone recording to Alex Monty (Frank Slimm) of me singing and playing the song. I asked him if he would be interested in producing the track. He really liked it and ended up producing, mixing and mastering the whole song. It was a very smooth process, since we both had the same vision of the song from the beginning.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE LINE/SECTION OF THE SONG?
My favourite part is the bridge, just because of the melody and how it flows. I also like how it comes straight after the second verse to boost the energy of the song.
CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND IN THREE WORDS?
Hmm, I’d say vibrant, personal and catchy.
WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT STUDYING AT BIMM?
My favourite thing about studying at BIMM is definitely the people I’m surrounded by. I’ve learned so much, not only from the teachers, but also my classmates and friends. Ever since I started studying at BIMM, most of my days have been packed with classes, rehearsals and gigs or recording/songwriting sessions, which is amazing. I just love being able to be around music every day.
